About Our Camp

At any other time of year, Portsmouth Camp, located along Hedley St. in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, is a quiet, reflective place, but it takes on a different character for the 10 days of its encampment in August. The tabernacle comes alive with singing, preaching and worship. Campers fill the retreat center and tent and RV sites. For 10 days the cry "It's campmeeting time!" comes alive, and a new year of holiness encampment begins.

Mission Statement: "To lift up Christ, to know Christ, to love Christ." This statement of mission reveals the heart of the vision of the Portsmouth Camp Meeting Association. Everything Portsmouth Camp Meeting is about is centered on those words about Jesus Christ, the Messiah who saves and sanctifies.

Our History

Portsmouth Camp Meeting was established in 1891. Its goal has been the preaching of holiness on Aquidneck Island and beyond.

In 1891 Seth Rees, pastor of the Friends church, had a vision of a grand camp meeting just south of the church on the sloping hill down towards Narragansett Bay. On this page you will be able to discover more information about him, Portsmouth Camp Meeting, and the Holiness Camp Meeting movement.
